Integrated Community Gardening Programme for the Elderly Community of Er Li Zhuang, Beijing (November 2019)
Research and proposal for community gardening initiative led by the residents, to answer the question: How might we support the local elderly community access affordable fresh fruit and vegetables and increase knowledge and practice of sustainable waste practises, despite restricted ground space?
A proposed integrated community garden scheme, utilising the existing infrastructure of volunteers in the community to increase knowledge and practise of sustainable growing practices, including composting, recycling and reducing waste.
This proposal was designed to encourage community participation and bonding, to democratise access to affordable fresh fruit and vegetables whilst engaging the elderly population of the community providing stimulation and education. It was also designed to be easily integrated into the existing spaces and bureaucratic systems of the community, for maximum impact with minimal cost.
